Dr. Erwin James Eldridge (1833-1902) was a surgeon with 16th Georgia Infantry Regiment, and then Cobb's Legion, serving in Virginia and then in Atlanta and Macon, Georgia, during the Civil War. Datelined, April 21st on the RR, From Macon to Albany, 2pp., pencil, with original cover. In part, “I sat down in charge of a special to Albany with dispatched and take advantage to write to you. As you probably know, Macon is as present in the hand of my enemy and we are all prisoners of war. Genl. Wilson is waiting for reply from Sherman as to whether we are considered their prisoners, or whether he was notified on before he got there, Genl, and staff all paroled within the limits of the city. No further restraint put upon us. At any rate, they do not carry officers off and I shall merely be paroled and left, even if they carry the others off, which I hope they will not do. ... make such objection of your valuables as you think best and upon the approach of the enemy Gent. M. will send to the officer in command, he will send him a guard for the house. Of course, they will take all the mules and all they want. ... Do not be alarmed. I do not think they will trouble you - try and get a guard. Do not be alarmed about me. I will see you in a few days. I am writing on the cars and can't read it myself. ...â€
