All three stereos are published by H.H. Bennett, Kilbourn City, Wisconsin, orange mounts, sharp/clear images, no back marks, in his series “Views at Libby Prison Chicago, c1892. Included “Along the South Front” with a sign on the 3 story brick building “Libby and Sons, (Ship) Chandlers & Grocers”, plus “Interior View” showings glass top display case and plus, “Interior View” showing a dozen or so hanging photos. These three stereoview photographs show Libby Prison as it was reassembled in Chicago as a tourist attraction. The first photo shows the south front entrance of the prison, followed by two interior shots that include several artifacts from the museum. The history of the building in which the prison was housed goes back before the war. It begins with one Luther Libby, who erected the building in 1845, to be used as ship chandlery. At a later date, this three-story building became a tobacco factory, and later a grocery store called Libby & Son Ship Chandlers & Grocers. In March, one year after the war had started, the old brick building was re-purposed again and became a prison. Libby Prison originally opened in Richmond, Virginia, in 1862 to hold prisoners of war from the Union Army. After the Civil War, it briefly held former Confederate officers. Ultimately the building was bought by a candy maker in 1889, who disassembled the prison and moved it to Chicago to serve as a war museum. Libby Prison was eventually dismantled and sold for scraps in 1899.
