A complete set of these fractional currency issued in denominations of 5, 10, 15, 25, and 50 cents. These featured the iconic Palmetto Tree of South Carolina, were ink signed and dated February 1, 1863. The purpose was to substitute for coins, which disappeared from circulation due to the hoarding of silver and gold coins during the Civil War.
