Printed Cover addressed to D. Barnes, Middleton, Connected, canceled Richmond, Aug. 31 (1865) with manuscript notation “From R.E. Lee- August 23, 1865.†On August 23, 1865, Robert E. Lee was at his family's residence in Derwent, Virginia, having accepted the offer to become president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) just a few days prior.
