Union soldier three-page letter written by John Bamford whoe enlisted on 10/8/1861 as a Qtr Master Serg. into Field & Staff New Jersey 9th Infantry. On 12/19/1863, he was commissioned into "H" Co. New Jersey 3rd Cavalry and was Mustered Out on 8/1/1865 at Washington, DC.Datelined Head Quarters Pleasant Valley, M.D., March 12, 1865, to his daughter. In part, “Our boys has had it very roughy since they started on thier expedition up the valley. Although they have had very good luck in whiping General Esley army again. Our division is the Third Div. General Custer commanding, done almost all the fighting and capturing about twelve hundred prisoners .. our lost was very small. We lost two of our Regmt in crossing one of the streams the current running swift, it took them off and they was drowned. .... We are till laying near harpers ferry awaiting orders... I am acting Division Quarter Master at present ....â€The 3rd New Jersey Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The "Butterflies", as they were known, were famous for being one of only two Union regiments designated as hussars, and the only one to serve with the Army of the Potomac. (hussars; flamboyant Union regiment in the Civil War, known for their colorful Hungarian-style hussar uniforms with yellow braid, red-lined capes, and distinct peakless caps.)
