Confederate Prisoner Letter, 1pp., written by “Jas.C. Saltus†who mustered into "C" Co. South Carolina 1st Infantry 3/1/1861. Datelined, Fort Delaware, Oct. 25th 1864, to Miss Rosali Robinson (niece) in part, “I have for sometime, vainly looked for a letter from you ... I am glad that you all feel easier in my condition here. .. On the 5th I received a long looked for visit from your Uncle Charles. he encounter great trouble and expense in getting here. I appreciate his kindness very highly. ... About a week ago I was informed that a firm in New York had deposited to my credit here, a hundred dollars in gold. It will give me an opportunity to help the members of my Company now in prison. ...â€James C. Saltus served as a lieutenant with the Confederate Navy. At one stage, he was commanding in the absence of Captain W. Dove Walter. He was captured in a fight on June 18, 1864.
