Remarkable USCT Federal Flag, 16-1/2” x 11”, 48 stars with stencil text “REGIMENT, U.S. COLORED TROOPS, REUNION, COLUMBUS, OHIO”. There are no tears or rips and only occasional age spots. Very Displayable. Accompanying the flag is a remarkable amount of research. The 5th US Colored Troops was the first African American regiment organized in Ohio, initially as the 127th Ohio Volunteer Infantry at Camp Delaware, Ohio, between August and November 1863. The regiment served in the Union Army during the Civil War, fighting in major campaigns such as the Richmond–Petersburg Campaign and the assault on Fort Fisher, and was later renamed the 5th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry. During the 5th Regiment United States Colored Troops' term of service, eighty-one men, including four officers, died on the battlefield. An additional 168 men, including two officers, succumbed to disease or accidents. Several soldiers from the 5th United States Colored Troops received the Medal of Honor, including Powhatan Beaty, Milton Holland, James Bronson and Robert Pinn, all recognized for their gallantry at the Battle of Chaffin's Farm (also known as New Market Heights) in September 1864. These soldiers were cited for taking command of their companies after all white officers were killed or wounded and leading their men with distinction.
