There are seven slaves listed: “1 Negro Boy, John, $1100, bought by John M. Clay; 1 Negro boy Boney $610.00 bought by Ross Webb; 1 Negro Man, Milford, $462.50 bought by Mrs. L E. Thomas; 1 Negro Boy, Martin, $700.00 bought by Robards Lewis; 1 Negro man, Joe, $620.00, bought by Robert Clark; 1 Negro Boy, Willis, $734.00 bought by Robards Lewis; and, 1 Negro man, Spencer ‘till Christmas, $20.00 by Frank Thomas.â€John Morrison Clay (1821-1887) was a Kentucky thoroughbred breeder, a son of statesman Henry Clay, and a husband of Josephine Russell Clay and the brother of Henry Clay, Jr. and James Brown Clay. That same year, In 1862, Clay's youngest son, John, sent Lincoln a snuffbox once belonging to his father.
