• Lot Description
  “Hearts in my Hand” is part of the artist’s new series Open Handed Games, which plays homage to Fluxus art. An open handed card game both teaches and reveals strategies. The four decks of cards (standard) can be mixed and matched to play both sides of the suit cards.  The hand imagery is wordplay “playing your hand” “playing the cards you are dealt” and for the evolution of the four suits and the history of playing cards.  The four jokers cards are embroidered by the artist and stitched to conceal and shape the objects in the palm of the hand.  Born in Greece and now based in Albuquerque, NM, Mary Tsiongas has performed, exhibited, and lectured extensively for the past fifteen years. Her work has been shown in over fifty solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally, including ARTSPACE, Sydney, Australia; NOGA Gallery, Tel Aviv, Israel; San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, CA; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; and the Lincoln Center, New York. She is currently a Professor of Experimental Art and Technology in the Department of Art at the University of New Mexico.
