• Lot Description
  Untitled Sonoran Desert, Arizona 1985 was created using a subtractive painting technique invented by the artist. Betts builds up layers of paint on the surface of the wood panel and then uses a laser engraver to remove sections of each layer to reveal the image. This image of saguaros in the Sonoran Desert holds personal significance to Betts as it references a particular time in his life. “For these pieces I use a subtractive painting technique I developed where I build up layers of paint and then use a laser engraver to remove them burning through the various layers. These images are of landscapes that have a personal significance to me and I have photographed at different times in my life over the years capturing and documenting the changes from our impact. I find the creative process itself is an ideal metaphor for the damage we have inflicted on these environments and the crisis they face.” – William Betts
