Graded PSA EX-MT 6. The 1984-85 Star #101 Michael Jordan card is a true icon of the hobby — Michael Jordan’s first NBA-licensed card, issued during his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls. It features a young, determined MJ in his classic red Bulls uniform, captured mid-action with that unmistakable intensity in his eyes, set against a simple white-bordered design typical of the Star Company’s regional issues.
Distributed primarily in team bags rather than nationally, the card is far scarcer than the more famous 1986 Fleer rookie, with only a few thousand examples ever graded across all services. This example was taken directly from it's bag just before submission to PSA, being held safely in its factory packaging for more than 50 years! It is offered with the original bag, still containing the other 11 Chicago Bulls cards.
Its clean, minimalist front and basic stats on the reverse have made high-grade copies among the most valuable basketball cards ever, with top examples selling for hundreds of thousands — and even crossing into seven figures in recent private sales. For collectors, it represents the very beginning of Jordan’s legendary career: raw talent, airborne promise, and the start of a dynasty.
The offered example has superior centering for the issue, as well as WAY-above-grade color and surface quality. One very small indent on the reverse was the reasoning for not pushing this gorgeous card into one of the next grading levels. The best looking EX-MT card you may ever see!
SET BREAK! 1984-85 Star Company Basketball Complete Set in Original Factory-Sealed Poly Bags
This lot is part of a rare, factory-sealed 288-card 1984-85 Star Company Basketball complete set being offered in 12 offerings in this auction. The cards remained untouched in the 24 original factory-sealed poly bags exactly as issued in 1984-85. The highlight is the Chicago Bulls bag that contained Michael Jordan’s true rookie card (#101) along with two additional Jordan cards (#s 195 & 288) in the Olympic/NBA Awards bag. The two bags with MJ's cards were opened, and his cards were immediately sent to PSA for grading--the remainder of the team bags are being offered sealed. The set also features the rookie cards of future Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley, and John Stockton, as well as cards of Hall of Famers Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and more, all safely ensconced inside their sealed team bags. A true time capsule from the dawn of the modern NBA collecting boom.
