- Lot Description
This is a traditional Chinese armchair, likely modeled after a Ming Dynasty official’s hat chair (Guanmaoyi). It features a tall backrest with decorative scrollwork, a simple crest rail flowing into the arms, and an intricately carved apron below the seat. This elm style wood uses mortise and tenon joint, a classic woodworking technique used in traditional Asian furniture for joining two pieces together. Its clean lines, balanced proportions, and refined joinery reflect classical Chinese design aesthetics, while its ceremonial look suggests it was intended for an elder, scholar, or official. The craftsmanship and ornate details indicate cultural significance and potential collectible value, especially if made from fine hardwood.
