1936 Berlin Olympics Brooch, Opera House Program, & "Das Dritte Reich" Book. Lot comprised of two items from the 1936 Berlin Olympics, including an Olympic games brooch pin and color illustrated Berlin opera house program with tasseled bookmark. Also includes red, hardbound book titled "Das Dritte Reich" in gold lettering, which translates to "The Third Reich."
Size: 9 1/2 x 8 1/2 in.
Book Size: 9 3/4 x 6 3/4 x 1 3/4 in.
The 1936 Berlin Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XI Olympiad, were held in Nazi Germany and used by Adolf Hitler as a powerful propaganda tool to promote the regime’s ideology and showcase a revitalized, disciplined German state to the world. Despite the oppressive political climate and widespread discrimination—especially against Jews and other marginalized groups—the games became notable for both their grand spectacle and the remarkable performances of athletes like African American track star Jesse Owens, whose four gold medals directly challenged Nazi racial claims of Aryan superiority. The event was also groundbreaking in terms of media, being the first Olympics to feature extensive radio broadcasts and live television coverage. While meant to glorify the Nazi state, the Berlin Olympics instead revealed the resilience and excellence of athletes from around the world.
