(2) Burmese Bronze Vahana Riders. Pair of Burmese bronze figures riding a goat and a dog.
Largest Size: 5 1/4 x 2 x 6 1/2 in.
In Hindu and Buddhist iconography, vahana riders are deities depicted mounted on their sacred vehicles, or vahanas, which symbolize the divine attributes, powers, and domains of the gods they carry. Each vahana—ranging from animals like lions, elephants, peacocks, and mice to mythical creatures like dragons or serpents—embodies specific qualities, such as strength, wisdom, speed, or vigilance, providing insight into the deity’s character and cosmic role. Artistic representations of vahana riders appear in sculpture, painting, and temple reliefs, often emphasizing the dynamic relationship between the deity and the mount, reinforcing themes of mastery, protection, and moral order.
