(2) Chinese Carved Wood Boxes. Pair of Chinese carved and lacquered wood boxes. Rectangular box with carved dragon in high relief on lid.
Chinese wood carvings, particularly in the form of boxes, represent a rich tradition of artistry that combines functionality with exquisite craftsmanship. These boxes, often made from fine hardwoods such as rosewood, huanghuali, or zitan, were used to store everything from jewelry and cosmetics to calligraphy tools and incense. Skilled artisans carved elaborate motifs into the surfaces—dragons, phoenixes, peonies, and scenes from folklore—each imbued with symbolic meaning meant to convey blessings of longevity, prosperity, or protection.
