- Lot Description
(2) French Framed Miniature Portraits of Napoleon and Josephine Oil on Bone. Indistinct signatures on both obscured by the round gilt edges of the sight area in the square black wooden matching frames. The backs are covered in weathered parchment from antique French texts.
Condition: Commensurate with age.
Overall Size: 4 3/4 x 4 3/4 in.
Sight Size: 1 7/8 x 1 7/8 in.
French miniature painting, typically executed on porcelain, bone, paper, or board, saw its greatest popularity from the 18th into the 19th century. Although artists like François Dumont and François Boucher were prominent, the field was dominated by the styles of the foreign masters, Peter Adolf Hall of Sweden and Friedrich Heinrich Füger of Austria. The art form's zenith culminated with the exquisite portraits of the Napoleonic court by Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin and Jean-Baptiste Isabey, whose works are highly prized by collectors today.
