(2) Japanese Imari Painted Porcelain Plates. Pair of Japanese hand-painted porcelain imari plates. Larger plate with painted scenic landscapes around rim, floral medallion center bowl. Smaller plate with flowers and songbird.
Imari porcelain refers to a style of Japanese ceramics that originated in the early 17th century in the town of Arita and was shipped to Europe through the port of Imari, from which it takes its name. Characterized by its vivid palette—typically cobalt blue underglaze with overglaze red, gold, and occasionally green—Imari ware features elaborate designs that often include florals, phoenixes, and intricate geometric patterns. Originally influenced by Chinese porcelain, Imari evolved into a distinct Japanese aesthetic known for its opulence and decorative flair. It became especially popular in Europe during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, influencing Western porcelain manufacturers such as Meissen and Royal Crown Derby. Today, antique Imari pieces are highly prized by collectors for their craftsmanship, vibrant color schemes, and historical significance in global ceramic trade.
