(2) Polished Malachite Smoking Items - Ash Tray and Pipe. Lot comprised of two polished malachite items, one ash tray and one pipe. Beautifully carved items with swirled striated bands in various shades of deep green.
Size: 7 1/2 x 5 x 2 1/8 in.
Malachite is a striking green mineral prized for its vivid color and unique banded patterns, ranging from deep forest hues to bright, almost neon greens. Composed of copper carbonate hydroxide, it forms in botryoidal, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses, often near copper deposits. Used since ancient times as a pigment, gemstone, and ornamental material, malachite was especially favored in ancient Egypt, Imperial Russia, and throughout the 19th century for inlay work, cabochons, and decorative objects. Its swirling, organic patterns give each piece a one-of-a-kind appearance, making it a favorite among collectors and designers alike. While relatively soft, malachite’s richness and historical prestige lend it lasting appeal in both jewelry and art.
