(2) Qing Dynasty Chinese Polychrome Painted Carved Wood Foo Dogs. Pair of antique carved wood stylized foo dog guardians with ornate polychrome painted details.
Foo dogs, also known as guardian lions or shishi in Chinese tradition, are mythological creatures that serve as powerful symbols of protection and strength. Despite the name “foo dog,” they are actually stylized lions, often depicted in pairs—one male with a paw on a ball, symbolizing worldly power, and one female with a paw on a cub, representing nurturing and protection of the home. Originating in ancient Chinese Buddhism, these statues were traditionally placed at the entrances of temples, palaces, and wealthy homes to ward off evil spirits. Their fierce expressions and imposing stances reflect their role as guardians, blending spiritual significance with artistic tradition.
