Ralph Lauren (born Ralph Lifshitz in 1939) is an American fashion designer who built a global lifestyle empire from a necktie line he made for Beau Brummell in 1967. Known for his “preppy” and “Old Money” aesthetic inspired by Ivy League, Western, and Hollywood styles, he launched the Polo brand, creating iconic polo shirts and making Ralph Lauren a household name in luxury and American sportswear by selling them through small boutiques and Bloomingdale’s. In the 1980s they began expanding into home goods, fragrances, sports gear, and even crystal and tableware, with the empire still expanding in the 21st Century by incorporating activewear and their own brand of coffee.
