(2) Vintage Leopold and Stevens Brass Sextant and Measurite.
Sextants and measurites represent two distinct but conceptually linked tools of navigation and measurement, one rooted in the seafaring past and the other in imagined or speculative systems. The sextant, a classic instrument of celestial navigation, uses mirrors and a graduated arc to measure the angle between a celestial body and the horizon, enabling sailors to determine their latitude with remarkable precision. Its brass frame and swinging arm evoke a time when exploration depended on skill, patience, and clear skies. Measurites, on the other hand, are fictional or theoretical units or devices—often found in speculative fiction or playful scientific jargon—that embody the human impulse to quantify the unquantifiable, from emotions to magical forces. Together, they symbolize a continuum: from the empirical mastery of the world through physical instruments to the imaginative extension of measurement into realms where rules are made to be rewritten.
