(2) Walter Gay Lansil (1846-1933) American, Hand Painted Wooden Display Plates with Nautical Seascape. Pair of decorative items consists of two circular wooden plates featuring hand-painted maritime scenes of masted sailing vessels at rest in shallow waters, displayed on black tripod stands.
Size: 11 3/4 x 11 3/4 x 1 in.
Walter Gay Lansil (1846–1933) was an American painter associated with the late 19th- and early 20th-century art scene in New England and France, best known for his finely detailed still lifes, portraits, and genre scenes. Born in Bangor, Maine, Lansil came from a prominent artistic family and studied both in the United States and abroad, spending significant time in Paris, where he was influenced by academic realism and the French tradition of meticulous draftsmanship. His work is characterized by careful composition, subtle lighting, and a polished, highly finished surface, qualities that made his paintings appealing to collectors during his lifetime. Lansil exhibited widely, including at the Paris Salon, the National Academy of Design, and major American institutions, and his works are now held in museum collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
