- Lot Description
(4) Chinese Cloisonne Porcelain Vases. Lot comprised of four Chinese cloisonne vases two larger vases with dark blue ground with pink peonies, smaller vases with pale gray cloud background with flowers.
Largest Size: 4 1/2 x 8 1/4 in.
Cloisonné is an ancient decorative art technique used to create colorful designs on metal objects, most commonly jewelry, vases, and small boxes. The process involves soldering thin metal strips or wires (called cloisons) onto a metal surface to form compartments or cells, which are then filled with powdered glass enamel or gemstones. The piece is fired in a kiln, melting the enamel to create a smooth, glossy surface within each cloison. After cooling, the surface is polished to reveal vibrant, detailed patterns often featuring floral, geometric, or figurative motifs. Cloisonné has been practiced for centuries across cultures—most famously in Chinese, Byzantine, and French art—and remains prized for its intricate craftsmanship and brilliant colors.
