(4) Modern Library Book Titles (1919-1932).
Size: (largest) 6 11/16 X 4 1/2 X 1 1/4 in.
This lot consist of four Modern Library Book titles: a) Studies in Pessimism by Arthur Schopenhauer, b) The Romance of Leonardo Da Vinci by Dmitri Merejkowski, c) A Virgin Heart by Remy de Gourmont, and d) Yama by Alexandre Kuprin.
Studies in Pessimism has gilt lettering on the spine, brown covers with the Boni Liveright logo on the front cover, in a Modern Library binding type 2 issued between 1919 and 1925, Brodzky type B endpapers issued between 1919 and 1925, the bookplate of Ruth Louise Weiss on the front paste-down, 182 pages of text, and it has 54 titles listed on the Modern Library catalog in front, so it is not a first edition. (It would be a first edition if there were only 12 titles on the catalog page.) The book measures 6 5/8 x 4 3/8 inches wide and is in good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text. There is wear at the heel and crown, along some of the edges, and light wear at the tips.
The Romance of Leonardo Da Vinci was translated from the original Russian of Dmitri Merejkowski by Bernard Guilbert Guerney, it has a Modern Library logo on the front cover in a type 4 C binding and type 4 endpapers issued between 1925 and 1929, with 635 pages of text, two pages of translator’s notes, and a four-page list of titles by Modern Library at the rear, so it is not a first edition. The book measures 6 5/8 x 4 3/8 inches wide and is in good condition, with wear on the crown, light rubbing on the heel, at some edges and at the tips, and there are corner creases on a couple of pages.
A Virgin Heart was written by Remy de Gourmont and translated by Aldous Huxley, and it is a stated first edition published in 1927, according to the copyright page. It has a Modern Library logo on the front cover in a type 4 C binding and type 4 endpapers issued between 1925 and 1929, the bookplate of Martin K. Rosenfield on the front paste-down, 236 pages of text, and a four-page list of titles in the Modern Library catalog at the rear. The book measures 6 5/8 x 4 1/2 inches wide and is in good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, light rubbing on the crown, light bumps on the heel, and light curls at the tips.
Yama [The Pit] comes from the original Russian of Alexandre Kuprin and was translated by Bernard Guilbert Guerney, and it is a Modern Library first edition published in 1932, according to the copyright page. It has a Modern Library logo on the front cover in a type 7 binding and type D endpapers issued after 1927, with 443 pages of text. The book measures 6 11/16 x 4 1/2 inches wide and is in good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, wear at the crown, and corner creases on a couple of pages at the rear.
