For a brief period in the early 20th Century, Zanesville, Ohio was known as the pottery capital of the world. “The Big Three” were local potteries that single-handedly carried the regional economy: Roseville Pottery, J.B. Owens Pottery, and Weller Pottery. Although pottery production had first appeared in the area in the early 1800s, it was not until the 1890s that the Big Three emerged, dominating the industry for the next fifty years. Even after Owens closed in 1907, its successor Empire and others who continued to use their patterns spawned countless other small companies to compete with the remaining Big Two, while trade secrets and individual talents frequently moved between them all. One of these was the Imperial Porcelain Corporation (1945-1960) created by Dr. Fred Phillips, which produced ceramics in Zanesville towards the end of the boom. Although only in business for about 15 years, the company made a wide range of functional and decorative items including two series of hand-painted figurines based on popular 1930s and 40s American cartoon characters. The “Blue Ridge Mountain Boys” figurines were by far their most popular, bringing to life characters created by cartoonist Paul Webb (1902-1985) for magazines like “Esquire” and “The New Yorker.” As Zanesville faced economic collapse in the aftermath of World War II both Weller and Roseville were shuttered, with Imperial Porcelain filling the gap until suffering the same fate and folding abruptly in 1960. Many of their pieces are now highly sought by collectors, with the largest collection held by the Zanesville Museum of Arts and Crafts.
Excellent. Figure against barrel has damage to one foot and missing the other entirely.
