(6) Austrian Patinated Bronze 'Naughty' Articulated Mechanical Figurines. Lot comprised of six patinated bronze 'naughy' figurines of women, five risque dancers in dress, one gilt reclining figure. Articulated reclining lady attributed to Franz Bergman.
Largest Size: 5 3/4 x 2 1/4 x 7 in.
Austrian mechanical “naughty” dolls were novelty automata produced primarily in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, designed to amuse—or shock—adult collectors with risqué or humorous movements. Crafted from wood, composition, or early plastics, these dolls often featured wind-up mechanisms that animated them in suggestive ways, such as lifting skirts, moving limbs, or mimicking intimate gestures. Highly detailed in costume and expression, they reflected both the skill of Austrian toymakers and the era’s fascination with mechanical ingenuity, blending playfulness with a wink toward eroticism. Today, surviving examples are rare and collectible, valued as curious artifacts of social history, technical craftsmanship, and the playful, sometimes subversive, sense of humor that permeated the European automata tradition.
