(7) Mesoamerican Zapotec Clay Figures. Lot of seven various Mesoamerican clay pieces, including humans, fish, and various animal figures.
Largest Size: 7 1/2 x 2 x 3 in.
Zapotec ceramics, produced by the ancient Zapotec civilization of Oaxaca, Mexico, are renowned for their distinctive forms, intricate decoration, and deep cultural symbolism. Dating back over two millennia, these ceramics were often used for both utilitarian and ceremonial purposes, ranging from bowls and effigy vessels to funerary urns depicting gods, ancestors, and mythical beings. Crafted from locally sourced clay and fired in open pits or kilns, the pieces frequently feature incised patterns, painted designs, or modeled figures that reflect Zapotec religious beliefs, agricultural life, and social hierarchy. Many surviving examples display the influence of Monte Albán’s artistic style, with stylized faces, elaborate headdresses, and symbolic motifs that reveal the civilization’s complex worldview.
