- Lot Description
African Maasai Carved Wooden Spotted Leopard Figure. Tribal work of a ferocious feline.
Condition: Commensurate with age.
Size: 8 x 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 in.
The Maasai tribe are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting northern, central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, near the African Great Lakes region. They are pastoralists and have a reputation as fearsome warriors and cattle rustlers. The Maasai traditionally wear one-piece garments called kangas, and are recognizable around the world for their elaborate jewelry and customs. The circular collars or necklaces worn by women vary wildly and indicate many things, including marital status, age, and financial stability. The piercing and stretching of earlobes are common among the Maasai as with other tribes, and both men and women wear metal hoops on their stretched earlobes. The Maasai produce intricate jewellery as well as wooden carvings of various sizes and subjects, and today frequently sell these items to tourists.
