Sight Size: 15 3/4 x 12 1/2 in.Claude Monet’s Woman with a Parasol (Facing Left), painted in 1886, is a striking variation on one of his most iconic themes: a woman captured in motion beneath a billowing parasol, immersed in the play of light and air. Unlike the earlier 1875 composition that included his wife Camille and their son, this version isolates the female figure—thought to be his second wife, Alice Hoschedé—against an open sky and windswept field. The figure is painted from a low vantage point, giving her a sense of monumentality, while Monet’s loose, expressive brushwork captures the ephemeral movement of fabric, grass, and clouds. The parasol itself becomes a vessel for color and shadow, anchoring the composition while emphasizing the fleeting qualities of a summer day. This painting exemplifies Monet’s mature Impressionist style, focusing not on portraiture but on the transient effects of nature and light on the human form.
