Andy Warhol, born Andy Warhola in 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was the son of working-class Slovakian immigrants whose early life was shaped by illness and the death of his father when he was thirteen. Displaying artistic talent from childhood, he studied commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and moved to New York in 1949, where he built a successful career as an illustrator for magazines such as Vogue, Glamour, and Harper’s Bazaar. By the early 1960s Warhol rejected Abstract Expressionism in favor of depicting mass-produced consumer goods, including Campbell’s Soup cans and Brillo Boxes, a move that both shocked and defined the New York art world and helped launch Pop Art. He soon became famous for silkscreen portraits of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, deliberately blurring the boundary between fine art and commercial imagery. Warhol cultivated a public persona as a detached observer, famously insisting he was not truly an artist, while his studio, the Factory, became a hub of artistic, musical, and social experimentation. After surviving a near-fatal shooting in 1968, he grew more reclusive and focused on commissioned portraits and publishing ventures, including Interview magazine. Collaborations with younger artists followed in the 1980s. Warhol died in 1987 leaving an estate that established the Andy Warhol Foundation and Museum, securing his legacy as one of the most influential chroniclers of American consumer culture.
