A masala dabba (or dabbe or dabbi) box is a popular spice storage container widely used in Indian and nearby Middle, Near, and Far Eastern kitchens. A typical masala dabba has a number of small cups, often six or more, placed inside a round or square box. The tradition is ancient, stretching back into prehistory, with no agreed-upon origin established, but the presence of similar objects in pre-dynastic Africa and the earliest dynasties of China indicate the concept was already a widespread one when the idea of civilization was first formed. Modern boxes are sometimes made in plastic and have transparent lids to display the contents inside. Usually a small spoon (approximately 1/2 teaspoon size) accompanies the box for easy dispersal. The most popular and daily usage spices like mustard, cinnamon, chili, garam masala, cumin, fenugreek, masalas, ajwain (bishop’s weed), turmeric, and much more are stored in this box. Some antique masala dabbas are considered heirloom art objects, and are passed on in a family from generation to generation, with a wide variety of styles emerging based on location, environment, and fashion factors.
Commensurate with age. Will hold spice.
