Antique "The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian" Engraving. Jacques Callot (French 1592-1635). Sight Size: 6.5 x 13 in.According to the traditional hagiography, St. Sebastian was martyred in Rome at the order of the emperor Diocletian (245–311). As depicted in this etching partly enhanced with an engraving technique, the saint was shot by archers, but miraculously survived (only to be beaten to death later). Since the Middle Ages, this excruciating ordeal by archers’ arrows was the subject chosen to represent Sebastian, a popular patron saint invoked against plague.
