Antique Wrought Iron Rush Light Candle Holder. Antique rush light candle holder with three thin legs.
Size: 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 x 17 in.
Antique rush lights are slender, tapering candles made from the pith of rush plants, commonly used in Europe and colonial America before the widespread availability of tallow and beeswax candles. Due to their delicate, short-burning nature, they were often paired with specialized holders—typically simple metal or brass sconces, wall brackets, or hand-held designs—that secured the fragile candle while catching drips. Rush light holders were both functional and decorative, sometimes featuring adjustable arms, drip pans, or ornate finials, reflecting local craftsmanship and style. Though the lights themselves were inexpensive and utilitarian, the holders could range from modest and practical to finely wrought, providing insight into domestic life and lighting practices in centuries past.
