- Lot Description
Arequipa California Ceramic Pottery Hexagonal Bowl. Small dark green hexagonal bowl. Irregular edges with grooves. Bottom marked Arequipa California and numbers.
Condition: Commensurate with age. Minor loss to one of the corners and what appears to be a pockmark above it. See images.
Size: 1 1/2 x 4 3/4 in.
Arequipa Pottery was founded in 1911 by Dr. Philip King Brown at a tuberculosis sanatorium in Marin County, California, as a therapeutic workshop for women. Under the guidance of noted ceramicists like Frederick Hurten Rhead and Albert Solon, patients created handcrafted pottery using local clay, slip-trailing techniques, and matte glazes. The pottery gained recognition at the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition and remained in production until around 1918, with pieces now considered highly collectible.
