- Lot Description
Australian Varga Bros (2) Signed Art Glass Candlesticks. Beautiful twisting and lined design throughout. Signed by Matthew Varga on the undersides.
Condition: Minor apologies on the foot of one and the top of the other.
Size: 4 1/2 x 15 1/4 in.
Melissa and Matthew Varga are the fifth generation of owners at Varga Bros, a glass company in Mitcham, Australia specializing in hand bevelling and hand silvering. The family business originated in an area that was once a part of Hungary, and after surviving World War II their father Les and his brother Steve fled the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, settling in Melbourne. After working for many other glass companies they started the Varga Bros business in 1979, and trained their children in the traditional methods. The family’s first silvering room was a converted bedroom, and instead of a heating table they would use the brutal Australian sunshine outside on a platform. To this day they continue to use many of the original tools and machines their grandfather used, and their primary focus now is on making hand bevelled mirrors, a nearly lost art making them the last company of mirror makers in the country.
