Boris B. Major (1876-1951) Russian/American, Oil on Board. Signed bottom left. Titled "Spring".
Vertical landscape within a forest. Label on back gives attribution and title: "Spring."
Condition: Commensurate with age.
Overall Size: 9 x 6 3/4 in.
Sight Size: 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 in.
Boris B. Major (1876-1951), born Berko Mesherowsky in Elisabethgrad, Russia, immigrated to the United States in 1906, settling in New York, and gaining citizenship in 1911. He quickly established his career as an artist, with his work beginning to appear on magazine covers that same year. In 1929, Major and his second wife embarked on a two-year journey across Europe and North Africa, during which he completed dozens of oil paintings and watercolors plein aire. Upon his return, his detailed, realistic views of cities like Venice and Cairo were highly lauded, and his pieces remain sought after for their focus on light and color balance.
