Bronze Tibetan Seated Bodhisattva of Compassion.
Size: 13 x 7 x 6 1/2 in.
Avalokiteśvara, known as the Bodhisattva of Compassion, is one of the most revered figures in Mahāyāna Buddhism, embodying the ideal of infinite mercy toward all sentient beings. Rather than seeking nirvana for himself, Avalokiteśvara vows to remain in the cycle of rebirth until all beings are liberated from suffering. His form varies across cultures—sometimes depicted with many heads and arms to symbolize his limitless ability to hear cries of distress and extend aid, other times shown more serenely with a single face. In China he is known as Guanyin, often portrayed in feminine form, while in Tibet he is linked to the Dalai Lamas, who are considered his emanations. The name itself means “The Lord Who Looks Down with Compassion,” and devotion to Avalokiteśvara reflects the central Buddhist theme of compassion as the path to enlightenment.
