Burmese Parcel Gilt Carved Wood Jeweled Temple Guardian. Burmese carved wood and gilded temple attendant with inlaid jewels.
Burmese "angels," often known as belu or nat thami in local traditions, are graceful, humanoid guardian figures that adorn temple entrances and sacred spaces with serene faces and flowing, celestial robes. Unlike the fierce lion guardians, these statues embody gentleness, protection, and divine presence, their hands often pressed in prayer or poised in elegant mudras. With gilded wings or crowns, they evoke a sense of otherworldly beauty—part spirit, part deity—bridging the human and spiritual realms. Rooted in a blend of Buddhist and animist belief, these angelic forms serve as benevolent sentinels, inviting peace, devotion, and reverence into every threshold they grace.
