C. Clyde Squires (1883–1970) American, Oil on Canvas Figural Interior "Angel of Opportunity". Oil on canvas painting depicting a man asleep at his desk, discarded work filling a wastebasket at his side, the impression of an angelic figure watching over him in his sleep.
Overall Size: 37 1/2 x 24 1/4 in.
Sight Size: 36 x 23 1/4 in.C. Clyde Squires (1883–1970) was an American illustrator and artist best known for his sentimental and often romanticized depictions of rural life, idealized childhood, and nostalgic Americana during the early 20th century. Working primarily in pen-and-ink and watercolor, he contributed to magazines, postcards, and prints, capturing tender, often wistful scenes that resonated with audiences seeking comfort and familiarity in a rapidly modernizing world. His illustrations, sometimes compared to those of Norman Rockwell and Charles Dana Gibson, carried a softer, more poetic tone, emphasizing emotion and atmosphere over realism. Squires’ work enjoyed wide popularity during his lifetime, particularly through commercially published prints and greeting cards that brought his art into many American homes.
