Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Plate. Chinese porcelain plate with cobalt on white scene of mentor and apprentice, with foliate design on rim.
Size: 2 1/2 x 14 1/2 x 14 1/2 in.
Blue and white porcelain is perhaps the most famous category of Chinese ceramics, distinguished by its vivid cobalt-blue designs painted beneath a clear glaze. First developed during the Tang dynasty (618–907) but perfected in the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368), it reached its peak during the Ming dynasty, especially under the Xuande and Chenghua emperors, and continued to flourish in the Qing. The cobalt pigment, imported from Persia in early periods, produced a striking contrast against the white porcelain body, lending itself to both bold motifs and delicate brushwork. Designs ranged from floral patterns and landscapes to dragons, phoenixes, and narrative scenes, making the wares both functional and highly artistic. Exported in vast quantities along the Silk Road and later through maritime trade, blue and white porcelain profoundly influenced Islamic pottery and European ceramics, becoming a global symbol of elegance and refinement.
