Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Apothecary Pot. Chinese porcelain apothecary pot with two small handles for hanging, decorated with flowers and vinework. With red wax export seal on base.
Size: 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 in.
Chinese apothecary pots, commonly crafted from porcelain, stoneware, or earthenware, were essential containers for storing medicinal herbs, powders, and elixirs in traditional Chinese medicine. Often cylindrical or jar-shaped with tightly fitting lids, these pots were sometimes decorated with inscriptions, calligraphy, or auspicious motifs indicating their contents or the medicinal properties of the herbs within. Produced in various ceramic centers, including Jingdezhen, they combined practicality with artistry, reflecting both the importance of health and the aesthetic sensibilities of their makers. Collectors today value antique apothecary pots not only for their historical role in Chinese medicine but also for their craftsmanship, decorative appeal, and insight into traditional practices of healing and herbal knowledge.
