Chinese Carved Boxwood Eight Immortals Statue of Li Teiguai. Chinese carved boxwood statue of Li Teiguai, one of the Eight Immortals.
Li Tieguai, known as "Li with the Iron Crutch," is one of the Eight Immortals in Taoist tradition, revered for his compassion toward the sick and poor. Originally a handsome man and devoted disciple of Laozi, Li's journey to immortality took a dramatic turn when his spirit, during a celestial voyage, returned to find his earthly body cremated. Forced to inhabit the corpse of a crippled beggar, he emerged with a disheveled appearance, an iron crutch, and a magical gourd containing elixirs capable of healing any ailment. Despite his irascible demeanor, Li Tieguai is celebrated as a protector of the downtrodden and a symbol of selfless service, embodying the Taoist ideal that true virtue transcends physical form.
