Chinese Carved Jade Pillow and Stand. Carved jade pillow featuring two figures (likely children or "boys") joined at the body, resting upon a secondary curved stand decorated with geometric patterns.
Sizes: 10 1/2 x 4 x 3 in. 10 x 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 in.
Chinese hardstone pillows are ornamental and functional objects traditionally crafted from materials such as jade, agate, marble, or other polished stones. Used primarily during the Tang and Song dynasties, these rigid pillows were believed to promote health, improve posture during sleep, and even convey spiritual protection or cooling comfort. Often carved into intricate shapes—ranging from simple rectangles to elaborate motifs like animals, flowers, or mythological figures—hardstone pillows also served as symbols of wealth and refinement. Their smooth, polished surfaces and carefully balanced forms reflect the Chinese mastery of stone carving, blending practical use with artistic elegance, and they remain highly valued by collectors and historians today.
