- Lot Description
Chinese Carved White Soapstone Double Buddha Pillow Rest. Carved soapstone pillow head rest with figures of the Fat Buddha on either end, with carved bat between.
Chinese pillow rests are sculpted head supports traditionally used during the Song through Qing dynasties, crafted primarily from porcelain, stoneware, or molded clay. Though they may appear uncomfortable by modern standards, these hard pillows were believed to support proper posture, cool the head during sleep, and promote clarity of thought. Often beautifully decorated with painted or molded motifs—such as lotus blossoms, children at play, birds, or auspicious symbols—they reflected the artistic tastes and spiritual beliefs of their owners. Some were inscribed with poems or used as burial goods, symbolizing peace and immortality in the afterlife. These pillow rests served both practical and symbolic functions, blending comfort, health philosophy, and decorative artistry in a uniquely Chinese form of domestic furnishing.
