Chinese Double Gourd Bronze Vessel.
Double gourd bronze vessel with thin spout, decorated in elaborate cloud texture. Four character mark on base.
Size: 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 4 in.
Double gourd bronze vessels are traditional Chinese containers shaped like the iconic “hulu” or gourd, a form long associated with longevity, prosperity, and protection against evil spirits. Often cast in bronze and sometimes adorned with intricate patterns, taotie masks, or symbolic motifs, these vessels were used in ritual, ceremonial, or decorative contexts, particularly during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The double-gourd shape, with its bulbous lower section and narrower neck, not only provides an elegant silhouette but also embodies auspicious symbolism, making the form a popular choice for both functional and ornamental objects. Today, such bronzes are admired for their craftsmanship, cultural significance, and the harmonious blending of form, function, and symbolism in Chinese art.
