Chinese Floral Blue and White Vase.
Chinese face with cobalt blue floral design on white ground. Unmarked.
Condition: Wear, fleabites to ceramic, some cracks and scuffing, please see images.
Size: 5 1/2 x 4 1/2 in.
Blue and white ceramics, among the most iconic of Chinese artistic traditions, are distinguished by their use of cobalt-blue decoration painted under a clear glaze, creating vivid patterns that stand out against a luminous white body. First developed during the Tang dynasty and reaching peak refinement in the Yuan and Ming dynasties, these wares often feature intricate motifs of dragons, phoenixes, floral scrolls, and landscapes, blending Chinese symbolism with influences from Islamic design through trade. Produced mainly at the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen, blue and white porcelains became highly prized both at home and abroad, fueling global demand and inspiring countless imitations in Persia, Japan, and later Europe. Their combination of technical precision, visual clarity, and timeless elegance has secured them as enduring masterpieces of ceramic art.
