Chinese Tang Dynasty Style Polychrome Painted Sancai Glazed Pottery Figure. Ceramic figurine of a woman, likely a Chinese tomb figure or "lokapala," featuring an elaborate looped headdress and a long, flowing robe decorated with blue, yellow, and green glazes.
Size: 29 1/4 x 8 x 5 1/2 in.
The Tang dynasty (618–907) produced some of China’s most remarkable historical figures, shaping politics, culture, religion, and literature for centuries. Among its most influential rulers was Emperor Taizong of Tang, whose administrative reforms and military expansion consolidated the empire and strengthened the civil service system. The only woman to rule China in her own name, Wu Zetian, rose from concubine to emperor, promoting meritocracy and expanding the examination system. In literature, the era is renowned for poets such as Li Bai and Du Fu, whose works combined vivid imagination with deep social concern and remain central to Chinese literary tradition. The Buddhist monk Xuanzang also stands out for his pilgrimage to India and his translations of Buddhist scriptures, which profoundly influenced East Asian Buddhism. Together, these figures reflect the Tang dynasty’s cosmopolitanism, political innovation, and cultural brilliance.
