Darrell Adams was born in Gainesville, Florida in 1963. As a child he would visit his grandparents, William J. Gordy and Dorris X. Gordy, in Georgia several times of year, developing an early fascination in pottery through his experiences at their studios in Cartersville and Primrose. As he learned more and more about the family history he decided to enter the business as well, attending the University of Georgia and graduating in 1984 with a BFA in Art. This introduced him to an even wider variety of pottery, taking all that knowledge back to William’s studio the following year as an apprentice. In 1986 he struck out on his own, opening his own studio in Cartersville, eventually taking over William’s space when he passed away in 1993. His emphasis on personal expression combined with the functional aspects of the art he learned from his ancestors has made his pieces as highly sought after as theirs, and he became more and more interested in processing his own materials. He built his own wood fired kiln in 1999, moving it brick-by-brick back to Gainesville in 2006 when he and his wife had their daughter. Since the 2010s Adams has maintained a space in both states, dividing his time between the land of his forefathers and the new home of the Gordy pottery legacy, with many of his works in public and private collections throughout the Southeast United States.
Good.
