Abstract, geometric sculpture, constructed from sharply angled, flat planes of painted metal. Its bold composition features a dominant, textured beige fan-like shape contrasted with smooth areas of red, black, and blue. The style reflects mid-20th century movements that focused on color, texture, and geometric abstraction.
Size: 47 x 36 x 39 in.
David Hayes (1931–2013) was an American sculptor celebrated for his large-scale, abstract welded steel sculptures. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he earned an A.B. from the University of Notre Dame in 1953 and an M.F.A. from Indiana University in 1955, where he studied under renowned sculptor David Smith. Hayes received a Fulbright Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a grant from the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and his work is held in major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. He was also a recipient of the Logan Prize for Sculpture and an award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. In 2007, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree by Albertus Magnus College. Hayes passed away in 2013 at his home in Coventry, Connecticut. His legacy continues through the David Hayes Art Foundation, which maintains a sculpture garden and studio at his former property, showcasing his works in a natural setting.
