David Roberts (1796-1864) Scottish, Nubian Landscape Lithograph. Title: "Temple of Amada, at Hassaia, Nubia." The work is part of his monumental series "Views in the Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia," published between 1842 and 1849. The tinted lithograph, created by Louis Haghe based on Roberts' original watercolor sketches from his travels in Egypt and Nubia in the late 1830s, depicts the Temple of Amada, a small Egyptian temple located in Nubia notable for accidentally preserving some of the most vibrant original colors of ancient Egyptian art, as early Christians covered the pagan sculptures with plaster, which protected the paint from light exposure. Writing throughout the bottom of the image and the margin indicate its origins, and that it was published by F.G. Moon in 1847.
Overall Size: 19 3/4 x 21 1/2 in.

David Roberts (1796-1864) was a prominent Scottish painter known for his detailed and evocative depictions of architectural and landscape subjects. Born in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, Roberts began his career as a scenic painter for theaters before transitioning to fine art. He traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East, capturing the grandeur of places such as Egypt, the Holy Land, and Spain in his works. Roberts’ paintings, particularly his lithographs of Egypt and the Near East, gained widespread acclaim and significantly contributed to Western understanding of these regions during the 19th Century. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1841, and his legacy endures through his impressive body of work, which continues to be celebrated for its historical significance and artistic mastery.
